Matthew -
The Kingdom of Jesus

A Devotional Study in Matthew

Does He Really Know You?

Matthew 7:21-23

Does He Really Know you? This is scary. Jesus says, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Alway from me, you evildoers!'

Do you notice that there will be people who address Jesus as "Lord, Lord," and who have preached and done miracles in His name - ones we'd recognize as Christians - who will be refused at Heaven's door by Jesus Himself? He'll say that He doesn't know them!

Wouldn't you like to make sure you know now already; will He really know you?

The defining prerequisite, Jesus says, are to be such as do the will of His Father who is in Heaven.

Since I love and want to obey Jesus completely I want to take this keynote seriously. Don't you? Obviously, speaking Christianese and doing Christianese things including (gasp) miracles, does not give us entrance to that beautiful, perfect eternal home.

In another place, Jesus said that He and the Father are one, so in fact, if we're not sure what the Father's will is, we can study the life and words of Christ to find out what He did and said we should do.

Wait! Then you CAN KNOW - does He really know you?

Some have exclaimed that it is impossible to know God's will in any detail. I look at this passage and I think, if Jesus says this is most important, then it must be possible. I've got to find out what the Father wants me to do. Earnestly, I encourage you to do the same.

PRAYER: Father God, I want to know what Your will is, and to do it wholeheartedly. It sounds mysterious to many, but I already know from Jesus' teachings, and His example that I must be utterly devoted to You in all my worship, I must put others first before my own desires, and I must heed Your prompting Spirit through my sanctified conscience and spirit. I also know that I may ask Your help - so please, HELP me!
