The Kingdom of Jesus

A Devotional Study in Matthew

Which Gate Are You Taking?

Matthew 7:13-14

Which gate are you taking? - This is a disconcerting question when you really don't know.

Ever been on a mezzanine, or in a huge public place with hallways and doors, elevators and escalators going in all kinds of directions and you are not sure which you need to take to get where you are heading? The choices can be rather confusing. You start looking around for someone who appears in the know and trustworthy, to ask directions.

Jesus explains here that in the journey of life there are really only two gates and two different roads to take. It's an either-or-choice. Since He's the Creator of the universe and all life here on earth, Jesus is the most trustworthy person to give us directions. He recommends, no, really, He urges we take the narrow gate.

The other one is a wide gate to a wide road that has throngs of people on it, however they are all headed for destruction!

It's the narrow gate and narrow road that leads up to life - eternal life - and sadly there are few that are choosing it, compared to the wide gate and road. Why is the gate so narrow?

Now can you answer; which gate are you taking?

Because self must be stripped of all baggage and pretenses. We cannot enter into a life that's going to Heaven until we've laid down any wealth, self-glory, or righteousness of our own. Most people have too much pride. It takes humility and confession of sins, to get through this narrow gate. It is too narrow for a moving van full of stuff. Hey, a pushcart is too wide. Even a duffel bag or purse is too much.

After we've accepted Christ as our only Saviour, our lives may be rough and in all kinds of dangers here on earth. Ah, but we are on the right road to Heaven! If we keep traveling on this narrow road we are bound to get there.

For sure, which gate you are taking is terribly important!

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for helping me come through that narrow gate, and I rejoice that You are my traveling Companion all along this narrow way. I also get glimpses of the Gate Beautiful and Heaven ahead. Hallelujah, it will be worth it all when we arrive there!
